Do you know what a digital nomad is?

Wikipedia defines them as “Digital nomads are people who use telecommunications technologies to earn a living and conduct their life in a nomadic manner. Such workers often work remotely from foreign countries, coffee shops, public libraries, co-working spaces, or recreational vehicles.”

I think most of us who have been working from home, since covid-19 restrictions, could call ourselves “Digital nomads”. I don’t think office workers will be in the office much going forward.

Now working from home has been proven to work for a lot of companies, I think companies will be pushing to continue, allowing people bro work from home.

They will tell you it’s for your benefit as it gives you a better work life balance. But the real reason will be money. Back in 2019 it was reported that desk space in London ran from £500-1500 Per person per month. That’s £6000-18000 per year for one person. An office 100 and you can see how home working will save companies money.

I personally see a world of flexible working spaces, which you pop into for meetings and work out of for a day or two. Company owned or shared 3rd party spaces.

This is not just my vision. There are counties out there offering visas just for this new way of working. Work from anywhere in the world. Is it that simple? Well it will depend on the work you do for you company. Not all jobs can be done remote or from outside of a country. So it wont work for everyone

The other question is. Are you happy to work from home? That’s a hard one to answer and I hope companies support those who want to work from an office and not from home. I’m happy to work from home but it is nice to see people in the office. Having the space to work from home is not ideal for everyone. We don’t all have large homes to dedicate as office space, for one person. Let alone two or more. I’m lock to have an office space to work from at the bottom bid my garden. I’m also blessed to be used to working with my wife in the same office space before working from home. Not everyone can do that, but we have been used to it. Having that separate space enabled us to still compartmentalised work and shut it away at the end of the day.

We shall see if my vision of the digital nomad world comes true over the remainder of 2021
